Winter Olympics: Diplomatic boycott of Beijing Games is ‘meaningless’, says Coe

The United States, Australia and Canada also announced a diplomatic boycott of the Games over China’s human rights record, a position China rejected as “political.”

Coe was criticized for his comments last week when he said he was “philosophically opposed” to the provinces.

“Boycotts, in general, are historically illiterate and intellectually dishonest. Political boycotts, frankly, are meaningless,” Coe told British media on Thursday.

‚ÄúThis is not to say that I apologize to countries that do not adhere to basic human rights standards… I am not indifferent or arrogant about human rights. I take them seriously.

“I don’t think in the long run (the boycotts) really achieve much. There are always unintended consequences. And at the end of the day, the people who suffer the most are the athletes.”

The Beijing Games start on February 4.
