Reignition of Republican Movement ‘dead and buried already’

Sky News host Chris Smith says the republican movement’s latest attempt to get the public to break away from the monarchy is “really dead and buried”.

The proposed framework for selecting the president includes each state and territory nominating a candidate, the Federal Parliament nominating three candidates, and obtaining a public vote of 11 candidates.

“Not surprisingly, senior Republican Labor leaders Paul Keating and Bob Carr have taken issue with it,” he said.

Keating says the model creates a dangerous framework, replicating the US-style presidency while Carr claims it places the president, above the position of prime minister.

Mr Smith said the only model “capable of winning broad national support” was the one Australia already had if the monarchy was removed.
