The racing yacht, named Schuss, was out of the water at the Sandringham Yacht Club at around 7pm yesterday when thunderstorms swept through Melbourne.

Lightning struck the boat, frying the wires and making a hole in the hull of the boat.

“It went through the mast, the electricity went through all the wires, it started a fire and it made a complete mess of the boat,” Shaws crew manager David Rutter told 3AW this morning.

“It caused a good portion of the boat side to melt from the inside,” he told Tony Jones.

“Unfortunately, you will probably write off the insurance.

“This is the end of our sailing for a while.”

Mr Rutter said that while the boat looks “very bad” from the outside, the interior has been destroyed.

“It was the start of our season next week at the Geelong Sail Festival, which is unfortunately out of the question now.”
