Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy’s killer, is still in prison. California Governor Gavin Newsom denied giving him the probation period. CNN reports. The decision despite recommendations from the California Parole Board and although Kennedy’s sons, Robert and Douglas, had expressed a favorable opinion. The rest of the Kennedy family remained opposed. Sarhan, 77, a Jordanian of Palestinian origin, has been in prison for 53 years. Bob Kennedy, brother of John F. Kennedy, was murdered in March of 68 in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after an election campaign.
Sirhan was initially sentenced to death, but was transferred to life imprisonment in 1972 after the California Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional. Governor Newsom never made it secret that he was a huge fan of Bob Kennedy, calling him a “political hero.” “After decades in prison – he wrote as a catalyst for his decision – the detainee has failed to address the shortcomings that led him to the assassination of Senator Kennedy. Mr. Sarhan lacks the business acumen that could prevent him from undertaking the same kind of dangerous business as the past.”
