Today Denmark celebrates 50 years of the reign of Queen Margrethe II. A voracious smoker, elegant in her style, Her Majesty the 81-year-old is considered the unifying force of her country.
She ascended the throne in 1972 after the death of her father Frederick IX and within 50 years of rule, she avoided scandals. The Queen has also helped modernize the institution, making the Danish royal family one of the most recognizable royal families in the world.
An artistic soul, white hair tied in the signature knot, she is much loved by her subjects and is one of the longest-lived monarchs in the world after Queen Elizabeth II.
