Erdogan condoles with Israel’s Herzog over his mother’s passing

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog late Thursday.

A statement from the Presidency of the Republic stated that the President offered his condolences to Herzog on the death of his mother.

“Knowing well that mothers’ places can never be fulfilled, I wholeheartedly share your grief, and I wish my sincerest condolences on behalf of my country and myself,” Erdogan told his Israeli counterpart.

“I wish happiness and your bereaved family patience and steadfastness.”

The mother of Isaac Herzog and the widow of the sixth president of Israel, Chaim Herzog, Ora Herzog, died Sunday, at the age of 97.

The former first lady is buried, with Israeli President Herzog delivering the eulogy.

“I stand here first and foremost as a son grieving for his mother,” he said.

“This situation, in which personal pain overlaps with a public dimension, is not an easy one, although it has been a part of life for us for generations. I am sure I speak on behalf of my brothers and sister – Joel, Michael, and Ronit – and all the family when I say that her whole life, our mother, Hala, knew how to bear this complexity and deal with it wisely, and from whom we draw our strength and our inspiration,” the grief chief added.

“My dear, beloved mother, we now put you to eternal rest.”
