At least four rockets target US Embassy in Baghdad: Iraqi officials

Two Iraqi security officials said at least four missiles targeted the US embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Thursday. The region is home to diplomatic missions and the seat of the Iraqi government, Trend reported, citing Al Arabiya TV.

Officials said three of the rockets landed within the confines of the US embassy. Another hit a school located in a nearby apartment complex. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

An Iraqi army statement said a girl and a woman were wounded in the attack, without elaborating on further details. The statement said that the missiles were launched from the Doura neighborhood in Baghdad.

Witnesses said they heard the embassy’s C-RAM defense system — which is supposed to detect and destroy incoming rockets, artillery, and mortars — during the attack.
